Canadian storyteller Anne Glover and Bento Rakugo, a dynamic storytelling troupe that adds a modern twist to Japanese comedy, will be the featured artists at selected public libraries statewide in celebration of the 2013 Hawaii State Public Library System Fall Programs for Youth and Teen Read Week.
Canadian storyteller Anne Glover and Bento Rakugo, a dynamic storytelling troupe that adds a modern twist to Japanese comedy, will be the featured artists at selected public libraries statewide in celebration of the 2013 Hawaii State Public Library System Fall Programs for Youth and Teen Read Week.
Glover, from Victoria, B.C., will present captivating and humorous stories featuring mind-bending string figures that she weaves out of a loop of string. Glover combines elements of sign language, uncanny sound effects, and charming characters as she shares classic folktales and stories of childhood events. Bento Rakugo will perform in the traditional Rakugo (Japanese translation: “fallen words”) storytelling style with a modern twist to the Japanese comedy. Rakugo is one of the most popular forms of Japanese theater, with a tradition spanning more than 300 years. In Rakugo, the performer presents a comic story while sitting on a Japanese cushion throughout the entire performance, speaking all of the voices in both the first person and third person. All stories will be spoken in English.
